The festival of Sant Roc Serra has been declared a festival of Provincial Tourist Interest of the Valencian Community. The most popular and traditional festival of the town has received the recognition of the Generalitat Valenciana 8 years after the Baixà, one of the most deeply rooted events in the town, was declared a festival of Local Tourist Interest.
The festival of gunpowder Serra receives recognition for years of work “a collective effort that now has its reward,” said the mayor of Serra, Alicia Tuson who wants to give “congratulations to the great family of the population rocker. The mayor is pleased with the recognition of “one of the most popular festivals and we live with more intensity in the town. The one that most identifies us as a people.”
The festival of San Roque de Serra dates back to the end of the 19th century and its main event is the Baixà, at midnight on the 15th and 16th of August. In La Baixà, the images of the saints that have previously been “stolen” from the church are transferred from the chapel to the homes of the major cloisters, accompanied by the firing of luxury rockets and string. The setting of the Calvary and the chapel make this event unique and incomparable. The festival, always around the gunpowder, also includes a correfoc, the cordà and the multitudinous traca corrida that on the day of Sant Roc runs through the main streets of the town and ends in a resounding terrestrial mascletà.
The events are organized by the Sant Roc Cultural Benefit Association, which brings together adults and children. This year the image of Sant Roc for children is 40 years old. The festival has also taken a step towards equality between men and women by having for the first time in history clavariesa mayor infantil and clavariesa mayor in the adult section. The convid19 however, has jeopardized the celebration of a festival that this year receives this honorary recognition. Soon, the clavariesas and clavariosas will decide on its celebration.
The resolution of Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial de la Comunitat Valenciana was agreed by the presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana last May 7th and has been published in the Diario Oficial de la de la Generalitat Valenciana today Monday, May 11th. In this way the declaration granted will be registered in the special Register of festivals, itineraries, publications and audiovisual works of tourist interest of the Comunitat Valenciana, first section.
