Serra’s Town Hall will start up the Museu de l’Oli (Olive Oil Museum) in an old oil mill in Pilota street, a central street in this town located in the heart of the Sierra Calderona Natural Park. The action will be possible thanks to the signing of an agreement between the heirs of the Domingo Fos family, owners of the property, and the Town Hall.
Through this document, the current owner, Vicente Arnal Domingo, gives free of charge to the Town of Serra the oil mill. With this free transfer, the Town Hall is committed to make an intervention in order to recover the splendor of the mill and locate the Museu de l’Oli. The municipality plans to make an investment of around 30,000 euros to value this ethnological heritage that is transferred for 10 years, extendable.
“This action is a part of the whole strategy that the Town Council of Serra has set itself to recover our rich heritage,” says the mayoress, Alicia Tusón. “Serra has always had a long tradition in the production of olive oil of excellent quality,” she adds. The town had almost a dozen oil mills located in the town center. Recently, after 30 years, the Serra Mountains Cooperative has recovered oil production in the town.
The future Museu de l’Oli will be located on the ground floor of a building of the early twentieth century located in the center of the town, between the church and the tower of the Lord. The installation of the oil mill ran parallel to the construction of the building in the early 20s of the last century. The new equipment is located in the Route of the Sculptures, a tourist itinerary that values the cultural, ethnological and monumental heritage of the town.
